Gifts for designers, illustrators and architects: a guide by profession

The easiest way to get a gift right for a creative professional is to think about what their pages look like. A designer's notebook is full of boxes and arrows; an illustrator's, of lines; an architect's, of plans. The right notebook, pen or color depends on that.

Here's a guide by profession, with what we'd give each one.

For a graphic designer

Designers sketch layouts, logos and grids before they ever touch a screen. Give them room to think in rough shapes: a blank notebook, not a lined one. A blue paper notebook makes wireframes and layouts drawn in white look like a plan, and it turns the sketch phase into something they'll want to show. Our guide on how to choose the best notebook for designers covers paper, binding and size.

For an illustrator

Illustrators already have sketchbooks. What they probably don't have is one where the page is black. White, silver and gold ink on black paper reverses the way they draw: they add the light instead of the shadow. Add a few metallic gel pens and a white colored pencil and it becomes a small new medium to play with.

For a letterer or calligrapher

Lettering in white or gold on a black page looks like a chalkboard sign or a vintage label. Pair a black paper notebook with a gold gel pen and a paint marker for thick strokes. More in a notebook for lettering in white ink.

For an architect or architecture student

White lines on blue is the look of the blueprint, the way plans were copied for almost a century. A cobalt blue notebook is a quiet nod to that history, and floor plans, sections and invented cities drawn on it look official. Blank pages leave them free to draw at any scale.

For a UX or product designer

User flows, journey maps and whiteboard-style diagrams translate well to a blue or black page: boxes, arrows and short labels in white ink, easy to photograph and share with the team. Blank pages beat a dot grid when the diagram doesn't fit a grid.

For a writer, poet or songwriter

A dark page feels more like a diary than a sketchbook. Lyrics, drafts and letters they won't send fit there. Nero and Blu are ready now, and Viola, our purple notebook made for journals, is coming soon (join the notify list). If they've never kept a journal, send them our guide to black paper journaling.

For a design or art student

Students go through notebooks fast and rarely buy themselves a nice one. A notebook with colored pages and a pen included is a complete gift: nothing else to buy before the first page. A spare white gel pen is a smart extra.

Not sure what they do, or which color?

When in doubt, black is the classic. Or answer our 1-minute color quiz thinking about them. Every Bocetta is one color all the way through, 17.6 × 24.5 cm, with 160 blank pages of 120 g/m² paper, a sewn binding and a white gel pen in the box.
