The science of contrast
Why black?
Contrast is what makes a line readable. White ink on black paper gives the strongest contrast of the four Bocetta colors, and there’s an optical effect on its side: a light mark on a dark ground seems to glow and looks slightly wider than it is.
Then there’s the feeling. A black page works like dimming the lights in a room: everything around the line disappears. It’s how amateur astronomers sketch what they see through the telescope, white on black, and it’s why black is the color we chose for focus.
Made for
- Illustration and fine-line sketching
- Lettering and calligraphy in white, silver or gold
- Late-night sketches, gigs and dim cafés

Four colors, four ways of thinking
Every Bocetta is one color all the way through. Pick the one that fits the work ahead, or simply the one you like most.
Questions
What pens work best on black paper?
Light, opaque inks: white, silver and gold gel pens, white paint markers and light colored pencils. Every Nero comes with a 0.8 mm white gel pen.
Is the paper black all the way through?
Yes. The paper is dyed, not printed, so the pages and page edges are black too.
What are the size and paper?
17.6 × 24.5 cm, 80 blank sheets (160 pages, no lines or grid) of 120 g/m² colored paper, a PU faux-leather cover and a sewn binding.
