Black paper journaling: how to start a journal in white ink

Most journals are white inside, and most journaling advice assumes a white page. But journaling on black paper is its own thing: white ink on a dark page feels quieter and more private, colors and metallics glow, and a single line looks like it was meant to be there. If you've been meaning to start a journal, a dark page is a good excuse to begin.

Here's how to start a black paper journal, what to write with and some first spreads to try.

What you need

  • A notebook with dark pages all the way through. Blank pages work best, because you'll draw your own layouts. Our Nero is black through every page, with 160 blank pages of 120 g/m² paper; Blu is the same in cobalt blue.
  • A white gel pen. This is your everyday pen. Every Bocetta comes with a 0.8 mm one.
  • Optional extras: silver or gold gel pens for headings, pastel gel pens for color coding, a white colored pencil for light guides, and a paint marker for bold titles. The full list of what works (and what doesn't) is in which pens work on black and colored paper.

One habit to learn early: gel ink sits on top of colored paper and needs a few seconds to dry. Give it a moment before you close the notebook or rest your hand on it.

How to set it up

You don't need a system to journal, but a little structure helps you keep going. If you like the bullet journal approach, a simple version on black paper looks like this:

  1. Index on the first spread. Number your pages as you go and write down what's where.
  2. A future log. One spread split into the coming months, for dates and plans.
  3. A monthly page. The days of the month down one side, goals or notes on the other.
  4. Daily pages. Short entries, one line or a full page. Whatever you'll actually keep doing.

If systems aren't your thing, skip all of it and just date each entry. The page is the point.

First spreads to try on black paper

  • A night-sky habit tracker. Each habit is a constellation; each day you keep it, add a star. It's the kind of page that only works on black.
  • A moon log. Draw the moon's shape each night for a month, with one line about your day next to it.
  • Gratitude in gold. Three things a day, written in gold or silver ink. Flipping back through it is the reward.
  • A mood tracker in pastel. One small shape per day, one pastel color per mood. Soft colors read beautifully on a dark page.
  • One line a day. A single sentence per day, nothing more. The easiest way to never miss a day.
  • Quotes and lyrics in lettering. The lines you want to remember, written large. White lettering on black looks like a chalkboard.
  • A mind map for the month ahead. On blue paper this looks like a plan on a blueprint; on black, like a map of the night.

Tips from the dark side of the page

  • Test new pens on the inside of the back cover before using them on a page.
  • Use a white colored pencil for guides. It gives you light lines you can draw over; a regular pencil won't show.
  • Write a little larger than usual. Light on dark is beautiful, but tiny handwriting is easier to read on a white page. We'd rather tell you.
  • Leave space. Empty black is part of the design. A sparse page looks finished on dark paper.

Which color for your journal?

Nero (black) is the classic: maximum contrast and the night-sky look. Blu (cobalt blue) suits planners who like their pages to look like a plan. Viola (purple) is coming soon, made for diaries, lyrics and private pages; join the notify list. Still deciding? Take the 1-minute color quiz.
